Michigan Sports Betting Update

In May of 2018 the Supreme Court repealed the Professional and Amateur Sports Act, allowing each state to legalize and regulate sports betting according to its own law.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the Lawful Internet Gaming Act in December 2019, paving the way for legal gambling in Michigan.

Following approval by the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB), Michigan launched in-person gambling at casinos on March 11, 2020 and online sports betting on January 22, 2021.

Michigan Sports Betting Laws And Tax Rates

  • The legalization of gambling means big money for the state of Michigan. Experts estimate Michigan will see nearly 8 billion dollars in sports bets annually, with 500 million in gross operator revenue.
  • Casino operators can expect to pay anywhere from $50,000-$100,000 to apply for a license to operate.
  • Online casinos will pay an 8.4% tax rate on adjusted gross sports betting receipts and 20-28% for online casino gaming.
  • The tax revenue will go to a variety of funds that provide important state services, including Michigan’s School Aid Fund, the First Responder Presumed Coverage Fund, and the Michigan Internet Sports Betting Fund, among others.

Benefits Of Online Sports Betting

Nothing can match the atmosphere of an in-person casino, but online sports betting offers tremendous advantages. Here are just a few.

Betting online is faster than placing an in-person wager, and can be done from anywhere by simply using your phone. Most brands offer user-friendly apps to make your mobile experience even easier. The best part of placing a wager online is you don’t even need to leave your own home, sparing you the trip to the casino.

Bonuses and Promotions

Most brands offer fantastic bonus sign-up offers that are more generous than you might find in-person. There’s a lot of competition out there and online casinos want your business! Brands know that you have a lot of options to choose from, so they are willing to offer great deals to get you started. Take advantage of these offers when you sign up. Most brands will offer a bonus deposit match on your initial deposit, giving you the opportunity to win more right from the start.

Easy and efficient banking

Deposit and cash-out is easy with online betting. You can use all major credit cards, PayPal, cryptocurrencies and more, while also racking up credit card points every time you use your preferred card.

Enhanced Regulation and Safety

Legal online sports betting in Michigan comes with built-in safety regulations dictated by the state and the online brand. Previously, Michigan residents had to place wagers using risky offshore sites or had to travel out of state to bet. Now you can do it all from the convenience of your phone, trusting that your online casino has built-in fraud protection and is monitored by the Michigan Gaming Control Board.

What We Check In Online Sportsbooks For You

At GambleOnlineMichigan we compare a wide variety of sportsbooks so you can make the right choice on what brand is for you. Here’s are some of the parameters we compare between sportsbooks:

Online betting bonuses

We’ll give you info on the types of welcome bonuses offered on each site. This includes deposit and no-deposit bonuses, risk-free bets, payment methods and whether or not the brand has a mobile app. Taking advantage of a generous risk-free bet offer can be a great way to get started betting online in Michigan. Take some time to look these bonuses over closely. For instance, you may be interested in using BetMGM because you like the layout of their website or usability of their mobile app, along with their $600 risk-free bet to start. However, FanDuel has a $1,000 risk-free option you can also take advantage of, while WilliamHill offers a $2021 risk-free bet to start.

How many sports you can bet on

Maybe you love to bet on the “Big Four” in the US (MLB, NBA, NHL and NFL). Maybe you prefer the UFC or the fast-paced action of NASCAR, or some Premier League Soccer. No matter what your sport is, we compare each sportsbook to give you the info on what you can bet on and where.

If you’re just looking to bet on your favorite teams like the Lions or the Pistons, all Michigan sportsbooks will have you covered. However, if your tastes run abroad and a little more obscure, check out our comparisons to see what you can wager on. For example, if you like more-obscure sports like rugby, volleyball or Snooker, WilliamHill Sportsbook has all of those options.

Anything offered by a sportsbook, from an NFL over/under, to a prop bet on who will score first in an NBA game, to a futures pick on who will be named MVP of the Super Bowl, is a market. We compare the markets so you’ll be able to wager on what you like best.

Maybe you prefer to take the long view and place a futures bet on your favorite team winning an NBA Championship, or maybe you like a more-specific prop bet, like who will commit the first turnover in the second half of an NFL game. You’ll be able to find it all with our comparisons. It’s helpful to know that younger brands tend to offer less options in sports and markets, so look for well-established brands if you’re looking to maximize your opportunities.

Different sportsbooks will have different odds for the same bet option, so it’s important to compare them. For instance, WynnBet might offer +150 odds for the Lions to defeat the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, but Golden Nugget might have those odds at +160. In this instance, if you bet on Detroit with the Golden Nugget, you’d receive a higher payout if the Lions won the game.

Security & cash out

We know your money is important to you. At Gamble OnlineMichigan.com we compare sportsbooks on their security, deposit and cash out options.

You want an online sportsbook that offers a lot of options for deposit. We’ll let you know which site offers the most, whether by credit card, PayPal, Skrill, online bank transfer or a prepaid benefit card specific to that online sportsbook.

Consider your options closely before making a deposit. For instance, some credit card companies consider a deposit a cash transaction and will charge you a fee. You can avoid this using PayPal. PayPal is widely regarded as one of the most reliable ways to deposit, with a near 100% acceptance rate.

FoxBet and FanDuel are two of the many online sportsbooks that offer the option to use PayPal, while BetRivers does not.

How to start

It’s easy to start betting online in Michigan.

  • After accessing your sportsbook of choice, most sites will direct you to a “Join Now” button. You’ll be instructed to enter basic information, such as name, address and email.
  • Once your basic info is verified, your account will be ready to use. Remember that you have to be at least 21 years of age and located within Michigan state lines to join. All brands use geolocation technology to know whether you are actually signing up in the state.
  • Once your account is up and running you can begin making deposits, often with the option of using your brand’s promotional offer. Funding options will differ from site to site, however all sites will offer the option to deposit with credit/debit cards, bank/wire transfers, or electronic/paper checks.

Types Of Sports Bets

Moneyline– A moneyline bet is a straight bet on who will win the game. You’ll know which team is favored by looking for a negative number attached to their team name. For instance, if the Detroit Lions are taking on the New York Jets and the Lions are favored, (which is highly likely considering the Jets’ play in recent years) you’d see: Lions -250, Jets +220. This means you’ll need to wager $250 on a Lions victory to win $100, while a $100 wager on the underdog Jets earns you $220 if they pull off the upset.

Over/Under– With the Over/Under, you’re betting on whether the total number of points scored in the game will be over or under a certain number. For instance, if the Michigan Wolverines are taking on Gonzaga, the over/under might come in at 180.5. If you take the over, you’re betting that the combined final score of the game will be over 180 points. If Michigan wins 110-103 and takes down the top-ranked Zags (go Wolverines!) the game will have reached the over with a combined point total of 213.

Point Spread– When betting on the point spread you’re betting on a team winning or losing by a certain amount of points. For example, if the Pistons are taking on the Lakers, you could see something like Pistons -5.5/ Lakers +5.5. As with a Moneyline bet, the favored team is assigned the negative number. If you place your bets with the Pistons (who remembers the Bad Boys from the 1980s?) they’d have to win and do so by more than five for your bet to be a winner. Conversely, if you take the Lakers they’ll need to lose by less than five or win outright. If the final score had a difference of exactly five points (for example Pistons 95-Lakers 90), it would be considered a push and you would get your money back.

Futures Futures bets take the long view and are typically made at the beginning of the regular season. These bets are placed on something like whether the Lions will win the Super Bowl, or whether the Red Wings will win the Stanley Cup. Futures bets are a fun way to stay engaged for the entire season on a single bet. You can also place a futures bet on the individual accomplishments of players, such as whether Adrian Peterson will run for over 1,000 in the season.

Props– Prop bets are not directly connected to the final outcome of a game, but have been growing in popularity in recent years. There are a wide variety of prop bets, including what the first turnover the game might be (interception, fumble, etc.) to which team will score first. Prop bets can also be placed on the performance of an individual player, such whether Robbie Grossman hits a home run or how many touchdowns Jared Goff throws in a game. The kinds of prop bets available are growing each season.

Parlays– A parlay is a single bet on the outcome of multiple games. Parlays can be very exciting but you can’t afford to get even one pick wrong. An example parlay would be picking the Lions, the Red Wings and the Pistons to ALL win on the same day. Let’s say the Lions dominate the Browns and the Red Wings win a close one against the Islanders. That’s great news if you’re a Detroit sports fan, but you’re still out of luck with your parlay bet if the Pistons fall to the Warriors. Either way, good for you for sticking by your teams!

Michigan Teams & Sponsorships with Sportsbooks

Some of Michigan’s most popular pro teams in several sports have sponsorships with Michigan sportsbooks, giving you even more reasons to get in on the action. These partnerships are designed to enhance fan engagement and come with extra perks when you root for your favorite team.

In September of 2020 the NFL’s Detroit Lions signed a sponsorship agreement with BetMGM, the franchise’s first official sports betting partner. BetMGM already has strong ties to MIchigan, their BetMGM Sports Lounge at BetMGM Grand Detroit opened in March of 2020.

Through the BetMGM partnership, Lions fans can now win cash prizes or all-expenses-paid trips to visit MGM resorts around the country when they play Lions Bingo on the Detroit Lions mobile app. BetMGM and the BetMGM Sports Lounge will also offer exclusive special offers and rewards through Lions Perks, a mobile fan engagement platform and rewards card that first appeared during the 2018 season. Lions Perks users can scan their card at Ford Field on game day to qualify for Super Bowl and Pro Bowl sweepstakes.

Through the BetMGM partnership, users also have the option to gift Lions Perks and Bet MGM Points to Detroit Lions charities.

MLB’s Detroit Tigers signed a multi-year agreement with PointsBet in July of 2020. This marks the first partnership between a sportsbook and a MLB team. PointsBet is sure to be a favorite among Tigers fans, as their unique PointsBetting product rewards players with more money for every correct wager they place. You’ll see a lot of the PointsBet brand when you root for the Tigers, including PointsBet signage on the main scoreboard at Comerica Park, and they’ll be highlighted on the Detroit Tigers Radio Network.

PointsBet will be featured regularly on The Word on Woodward, a fan-favorite live-streamed show that appears on the club’s YouTube channel. Users of the MLB App and the Detroit District App will find PointsBet integrated into their platforms. PointsBet has also reached an agreement with MLB to be an authorized gaming operator, allowing official MLB data and trademarks to be used in their sportsbook.

The Tigers are not the only pro team to partner with PointsBet. The NHL’s Detroit Red Wings signed a multi-year partnership with the sportsbook in October of 2020. As a result of the partnership, the former Sports & Social Detroit at Little Caesars Arena is now the PointsBet Sports Bar. Along with offering a full-service food and beverage menu, the bar will provide live betting odds, high-definition televisions, VIP access, special guests and numerous gaming promotions.

You’ll find a strong PointsBet presence on all Red Wings’ digital platforms, along with the Red Wings radio network and The Word on Woodward show.

Fear not NBA fans, the Detroit Pistons have not been left out of the action. The Pistons signed multi-year sponsorship deals with both FanDuel and DraftKings Inc in the fall of 2020, making them the first pro franchise to have deals with both sportsbooks. Using the FanDuel and DraftKings apps, Piston fans will be able to compete for tons of great prizes, including a group to trip to Little Casears Arena, and FanDuel will host viewing parties and giveaways during Pistons home games.
