Licensing and Fees for Online Casinos in Michigan

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed into law the Lawful Internet Gaming Act in December 2019. This bipartisan measure allows only land-based Michigan casinos, including the 23 statewide tribal casinos, to offer online casino gaming and sports betting to customers.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board will issue licenses for online and mobile gaming if the online outlet is partnered with a land-based casino. To obtain the initial five-year license to operate online within the state, the applicant will need to pay a $50,000 application fee. If accepted, the initial license will cost $100,000 with a yearly $50,000 renewal fee to follow.

Legal Online Casinos Benefits

Not only do Michigan’s online casinos make it easy to play for real money from home or on-the-go, they make playing safe. You can rest assured that your money, identity and privacy is being protected at all times. Each online casino is partnered with the best casinos in the state, and every outlet must adhere to the same strict state regulations. The rules and odds of each online game are the same as if you were playing in-person at a table or slot in the casino.

Unlike when gambling at an illegal site, there is no worry about getting your money back when you win. With these legal Michigan online casinos and sports books, you are guaranteed to receive your money in a timely fashion. Each online casino offers a wide variety of payment options for the player. Deposits and withdrawals can be made using major credit cards, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, PayNearMe, and eCheck among other methods. Regardless of which option you choose, players will know their money is safe and secured with their privacy always firmly intact.

What we check in Online Casinos for you

Everyone wants choice. Sometimes, though, sorting through too many choices can be a problem. Every online casino may look similar on the surface, but there can be a wide variety of differences between them. We take the trouble out of searching for the online casino that best suits your wants and needs.

So, what do you want out of your online casino experience?

From the very beginning, you want to get the most bang for your buck. Whether using a mobile app or a website, you want the initial signup and deposit to be fast, easy and secure. We check for that. Knowing that BetMGM casino accepts Neteller accounts while DraftKings casino welcomes Skrill account holders can make a difference in where you sign up to play.

Another factor to consider is the online bonus offered by each casino and its loyalty program. Not all online casinos give back to their customers in the same fashion. We look to see what the latest bonus offers are. Do you want the $30 signup bonus offered by Golden Nugget casino, or does PokerStars casino’s $50 welcome bonus seem more enticing?

What about the games? That’s why you’re here, right? Certainly, blackjack, roulette, craps and the most popular table games are offered on every online casino, but what if you’re in the mood for a live game? Not every casino offers that. Or what about a hand of poker? Or a video poker slot? In fact, which slot machines – and how many – are available at each site? Don’t forget about sports betting. Who’s offering the best odds and point spreads on tonight’s game? These are the questions on every online casino patron’s mind, and we provide the answers.

When it’s time to cash out, you have to feel secure knowing you will receive your money in a timely fashion. We check for that, too, because nothing matters more than your money and its safety.

Let us take the worry out of searching through each of these parameters so you can focus on what matters most: the entertainment and thrill of playing at Michigan’s top online casinos and sports books.

How to start

You do not need to be a Michigan resident to sign up at one its online casinos or sports books. However, you must be 21 years old and located within the state’s borders to play.

Creating an account is easy. While each online casino does things differently, there will be three main items you will need to provide when you sign up. The first is your personal details and contact information. Next, you will need to create an account along with a username and password. Lastly, you will need to make an initial deposit. Once all of that information is verified – you may be required to submit your ID for legal purposes — you will be ready to play all of your favorite table games and slots or bet on a sporting event.

Casino Gambling and Apps

We all seem to live on our phones these days. So it should come as no surprise that nearly all of Michigan’s best online casinos and sportsbooks offer iOS and/or Android apps. The great part of downloading and using a mobile app is that you can play your favorite table game or slot from anywhere. Each app features the full casino and sportsbook options you would expect to find on a regular casino website.

Each brand’s app offers different features. FanDuel and DraftKings both allow players to compete in daily fantasy sports as well as having a portal to their online casino offerings. BetMGM and Golden Nugget allow players to access their casinos in any state in which online gambling is legalized. Take the time to discover which casino app works best for you. Regardless of which mobile app you ultimately choose, rest assured that your money and privacy is always secure.

Sweepstakes Casinos

Want to win real cash using “play” money? Then you might want to try out a sweepstakes casino.

Here you can enjoy all of the usual casino table games and slots in a safe, legal setting, but wager using a “token” rather than money. When you win, you can then exchange your tokens for real, actual cash.

These sites cannot legally accept direct cash deposits. Instead, they have players purchase “tokens” which are then used only on the site to play the free sweepstakes contests, games and slots available. Accumulated “tokens” can later be redeemed for money whenever the player decides to cash out.

Casino Bonuses

Even Michigan’s best online casinos want to attract new customers. As an incentive, almost every casino website or app offers new players a bonus (or two). These come in a variety of forms, but the most popular include:

First Deposit Bonus: Casinos will match the initial cash deposit with an equal amount in player credit.

No Deposit Bonus: Exactly as it sounds, the casino will reward the player with the cash bonus as long as its specific requirements are met.

Free Spin Bonus: New players will be granted a certain number of free spins on one (or more) pre-chosen slot.

New Player Bonus Code: Upon signing up, the player will be given a special code to use on the site which may activates a variety of free offers, including those listed above.

Refer A Friend: Certain casinos will reward you with bonus cash should you get a “friend” to sign up via a referral link.

Loyalty program and comp points

Playing has its benefits, even should you lose. The best Michigan online casinos offer all of its members an easy-to-understand rewards program.

Through these loyalty programs, the more you play, the more points you’ll earn at each venue. For example, $100 played might earn the player $1 in reward points. These can be then used in a variety of ways. At BetMGM, rewards points can be used for discounted (or free) rooms and meals, free items in their webstore, and for online casino cash bonuses.

While it can take an awful lot of play to become a VIP, these programs aren’t just for big spenders. Certain casinos, like the Golden Nugget, reward its players for merely depositing money. And with Golden Nugget’s reward program, points can be exchanged for actual cash.

It is always advantageous to sign up as a rewards member. It’s free, and you never know what bonus may be coming next.

Online Casino Games in Michigan

Online Slots: Easily the most popular casino offering, slots provide the most variety of choice to the player both in terms of betting amounts and game design. Games can be based around pop culture brands such as Wheel of Fortune and Wonder Woman, or they can be more exotic like Cleopatra, or whimsical as in Divine Fortune. Online casinos offer free slot play to try out games, allowing players to discover what they like or don’t prior to ever putting in $1 in real money. Given all of the options in game designs, layouts, themes and bonus games, players will have entertaining time choosing a favorite slot in the casino.

Video Poker: Taking the stress out of competing against other players, video poker slots have players complete their best possible five-card poker hand in a three card draw fashion. Players must complete a “jacks or better” hand to win on most plays, however, multiple variations of the game exist. Some feature a Joker or “deuces wild” or other such variables given the player’s choice. In any form, the ultimate hand is a royal flush which will pay the jackpot which may or may not be progressive, depending on the slot. Multiple-hand games are also available.

Online Keno: Imagine playing the lottery, but not having to wait a week to see if your numbers won. That’s keno. The player can choose anywhere from one to up 15 numbers out of the 80 possible plays. When it comes to time for the drawing, 20 numbers are pulled. Depending on how many numbers drawn the player had chosen, a payout is determined. The more numbers correctly played, the more money a player will win.

Online Blackjack: The most popular of table games, blackjack is easy to learn and play. It’s you versus the dealer. The player who’s cards total closer to 21 wins. Aces can be 1 or 11, face cards are 10, and the numerical cards are their face value. Each player is dealt two cards, then offered a chance to draw more cards in an attempt to reach 21. But be careful! Going over 21 is an instant loss. Yet if you get dealt an ace along with a face card, and you have blackjack – an instant win.

Online Baccarat: Even though this game is often associated with secret agent James Bond, don’t be intimidated. Baccarat is a simple card game, not too far removed from blackjack. There are three bets available: on the player to win the hand, on the banker/dealer to win, or a tie. Cards possess their face values, however unlike in blackjack, face cards here are zero and aces are always one. Players are dealt two cards with the possibility of drawing a third in an attempt to have the hand closest to totaling nine points (when two cards equal an amount over 10, the left digit is dropped. For example, a seven and a nine equal 16, but in baccarat, their total is six).

Online Roulette: One wheel, one ball, and 38 colored numbers. In roulette, the player has multiple betting options. Pick a favorite number (or several), choose red or black (or green), bet on odd or even, or any combination of these factors, and then watch and wait for the spinning ball to drop. Roulette is simple to learn, fast to play and great fun either when alone or in a group. Everyone has a favorite number. Yours might just be the lucky one.

Online Craps: Lucky number seven never had a greater importance than in craps. It’s the fast-paced dice game which will quickly gather a crowd whether played online or in the casino. Players bet on the total of two dice. On the first roll, seven or eleven can be an instant win with a “pass” bet while two, three or twelve is an instant loss…unless you bet against the dealer on “don’t pass.” If any other number is thrown on that first roll (the “point”), then it’s a race between the point and the next seven over the ensuing dice rolls to determine the outcome of all the other wagers.

Table Games: Other card games are available to play as well:

  • Texas Hold’em is a seven-card poker game in which the player attempts to make the best five-card hand out of his two “hold” cards and the five communal cards on the table. In the table game version, the player only needs to beat the dealer – not the other players at the table as in the traditional game.
  • Let It Ride is a variation on the traditional five card stud poker game. Players attempt to get the best poker hand between the two dealt cards and three communal cards. During each communal card’s reveal, players can choose to either remove one of three pre-deal bets, or continue to “let it ride.” Payouts are based on each poker hand’s pre-determined odds.
  • Three Card Poker is played between the dealer and the player. Each has three cards to make the best poker hand. The dealer must have a queen or higher to qualify, otherwise the player’s bet is automatically returned. If a player folds, or cannot beat the dealer’s hand, the player loses. Otherwise, the player wins his bet plus a bonus (based on odds) if certain hands are achieved.

Live Dealer Games: Do you prefer the look and feel of real cards or a real roulette wheel compared to their computerized counterparts? Then you might just enjoy playing “live dealer” games. Here, a live person in the casino deals the cards or spins the wheel and interacts with you wherever you may be. This allows for a more intimate casino experience with the dealer interactions and conversation many people are used to and prefer.

Payment Methods in Michigan for Online Casinos

Depositing money into your account has never been easier given the wide variety of options available. Not every online casino offers every option, but we’re sure you’ll be able to find one that works for you.

The most popular method is, of course, a major credit card such as Visa or MasterCard. But if you don’t have one, don’t worry! Other options are certainly available.

PayPal requires only an email address to create an account, and through their site, you can deposit money from another credit card or bank account as well.

Want to pay with Bitcoin? If so, Neteller offers cryptocurrency transfers along with all of the usual monetary services. Neteller also works at most ATMs.

Skrill is a virtual wallet which offers customers free money transfers. Their services have been available since 2001 and their app offers a safe and secure way to send money anywhere in the world.

No bank account? No problem. PayNearMe is a payment processing service available in convenient locations such as CVS Pharmacy and Family Dollar. Their service is also utilized by Off-Track Betting.

While these are the most popular options, many of Michigan’s online casinos accept other payment services as well. Visit your favorite to learn more.

Can I stop playing?

Gambling is a popular form of entertainment. Unfortunately for some people, it can get out of hand. Should you recognize you or a loved one has a gambling problem, always seek help.

Michigan offers several programs to help problem gamblers take back control. This includes Michigan’s Health Management Systems of America Gambling Treatment Program, the possibility of inclusion on Michigan’s Disassociated Persons List, and the Michigan Association of Problem Gambling Help-Line: 1-800-270-7117.

Nationally, Gamblers Anonymous and the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) are available as well.
